Sesame Street Live: "Can't Stop Singing"
The Plot
Sesame Street Live: "Can't Stop Singing" finds the fuzzy gang in an extraordinary pickle. Elmo uses Abby Cadabby's magic wand to cast a “singing spell” that causes Bert, Ernie, Cookie Monster, Grover, Big Bird, and friends to harmoniously belt out every word they mean to speak. It's all fun and games at first, but as Elmo keeps the tunes coming one after the other, his exhausted friends begin to grow hoarse and collapse under 90 minutes of Broadway-style songs and dances. Meanwhile, Abby feverishly searches for her wand, seeking out the wisdom and counsel of Hoots the Owl and encountering other memorable characters along the way. Will she find her wand in time to stop the never-ending cycle of song? And will Elmo realize that music loses its magic if it never ends?
The Music
Every Sesame Street Live production is filled with music, but none is quite as jam-packed as Can't Stop Singing, which showcases classic Sesame Street songs alongside playful parodies of pop numbers such as "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You." Children learn about the wonders of harmonizing with Grover and Baby Bear, who explore high notes and low notes during a duet about porridge. Bert and Ernie sing loud and soft in their version of “Shout!” to demonstrate how a song can change its dynamics. And Cookie Monster brings down the house when he transforms the disco anthem “It's Raining Men” into “It's Raining Cookies,” complete with tempos both speedy and slow. Sesame Street's beloved tune “Sing” also makes a melodic cameo.
The Sights
Close encounters of the Sesame Street kind do not end at the door. Avid Muppet spotters get to mark two rare sightings off their checklists. Hoots the Owl returns to the live show after a lengthy absence, and Murray—the affable host of "The Word on the Street"—conducts a segment with the audience during the show and also leads a sing-along with his big number, “Mouth Music.”
