In Big East battle, Pirates pursue 10th NCAA tourney berth with speedy sprints, skillful ball handling & ample quantities of school spirit
Humans have been putting spherical objects in hoops for centuries, but until the invention of the dunk, the fast break, and face dribbling, it wasn’t an activity worth watching. See if “basketball” lives up to the hype with today’s deal: for $15, you get one ticket to see the Seton Hall Pirates men’s basketball team take on the St. John’s Red Storm at the Prudential Center in Newark on Tuesday, February 14, at 7 p.m. (up to a $31.50 value, including ticketing fees). Seating is in section 1, 4, 5, 11, 12, 15, 16, or 22.
Fueled by more than a century of basketball lore, the Seton Hall Pirates hope to add a 10th NCAA Tournament to the history books during the homestretch of the 2011–12 season. From lower-level seats, fans can watch the Pirates loot their Big East rival’s basketball booty as they snap quick passes and juke extremely lost tour buses. Seven new recruits have laced up with this year’s roster, including forward Brandon Mobley, an alumnus of the Atlantic Celtics AAU program that spawned NBA All-Stars Dwight Howard, Joe Johnson, and Amar’e Stoudemire. Through 24 games, senior forward Herb Pope has racked up team-leading stats, dropping an average of 17 points per game and knotting his high-tops with the chewiest of red-licorice laces.
The centerpiece of downtown Newark’s revitalization project, the Prudential Center hosts collegiate athletics when the New Jersey Devils plague opponents’ rinks. With a 4,800-square-foot LED TV and a capacity of 18,500, the arena also makes an ideal venue for concerts and all-conference square dances.
