An all-star ensemble of eight performers, the SF Jazz Collective gathers the sounds of horns, drums, strings, and keys to bring a modern rhythm to jazz classics. Each year, the band commemorates a different jazz master—with past years celebrating John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk—and also performs original compositions. In 2011, fueled by the energy of acclaimed trombonist Robin Eubanks and trumpeter Avishai Cohen, the troupe tackles the soulful repertoire of Stevie Wonder, riffing on the famous melodies of “Superstition” with harmonic dissonance and necklaces of garlic cloves. The band tosses the melody of hits such as “Creepin’” and “My Cherie Amour” from man to man, letting the song transform under the whims of the xylophone or the impulses of the bass. Built in 1879, the historic theatre has undergone four major facelifts to maintain its dignified beauty, and its grand stage still remembers Oscar Wilde’s cheekiness and the secret behind Harry Houdini’s escapes: smoke, mirrors, and having hands for feet.
