The brainchild of native Hawaiian and veteran comic Bo Irvine, Comedy Combo at Sharkey’s Comedy Club unites a Polynesian comedy show for English-speaking tourists with standup acts from both local and national comics. Irvine––who won Last Comic Standing’s 2008 Hawaii Showcase and has opened for acts such as George Carlin––joins up with funny buddies Ken Komoto, master of the balloon animal, and Michael Staats, who parodies Hawaiian songs. Together they don floral shirts and regale audiences with relatable regional humor and jokes that capture travelers’ first jaw-dropping glimpse at the ocean and first realization that the snowsuits they packed will be useless.
Following the Polynesian laughfest, standup comics take the stage for the next 90 minutes. Jokesters such as Arthur Wayne, a Bay Area comedian known for his laid-back persona, and Kenny Johnson, a world-traveling laugh master, take the burden of tickling one’s own funny bone away from grateful audience members.
