What You’ll Do
Art and science melt together in soap-making laboratories, and the workshop of Mr. B’s Luminaries is no exception. Professional soap and candle maker (or chandler) Shem Gott guides this two-hour experience, which begins with hands-on work, and ends in your bathroom—when you take home the bar you made.
Watch and Listen
First, Shem describes hot- and cold-process soap-making techniques and shares information about the beneficial natural ingredients you’ll be using.
Melt, Mix, and Pour
When it’s time to roll up your sleeves, you’ll melt oils, mix dry ingredients, add a saponifying agent, and pour your mixture into a mold.
As the soap begins to cure, Shem will lead a question-and-answer session, and you’ll have plenty of chances to ask him about where he gets his ingredients.
Snag Your Soap
After it’s cured for 24 hours, your soap is ready for pickup.
Owner, Mr. B’s Luminaries
Shem Gott began making candles and soaps as a hobby, but it wasn’t long before his passions evolved into a profession. Today he operates a workspace and retail shop, Mr. B’s Luminaries, where he showcases hand-poured candles made with organic soy wax, fair-trade essential oils, and zinc-free wicks. More recently, Shem has added hand-poured soaps—labeled Mr. B’s Necessities—to shop shelves, crafting each lavender tea tree charcoal or peppermint sea clay bar with the same artistic and ethical dedication that guides his candles.
