Shipwrecked! An Entertainment
Having just three people portray a shipwrecked adventurer, a sea captain, Queen Victoria, a host of bustling London residents, airborne wombats, and an energetic dog isn’t easy. But it’s at least fun, especially with a witty, whimsical script from Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Donald Margulies. The show, subtitled The Amazing Adventures of Louis de Rougemont (as Told by Himself), spins the true-ish tale of a once-bedridden boy who strikes out on his own and ends up on a pearl-fishing voyage off of the coast of Australia. Soon, Louis finds himself battling octopi and setting up shop on a deserted island after a shipwreck. But when he returns to London to write his memoir, he’s naturally met with skepticism toward his fantastical tales. Will he be remembered as a hero or a liar? The family-friendly play answers this question with breathtaking visuals for youngsters mixed in with tips on how to write a believable memoir for adults.
Centerstage! Theatre is one of Puget Sound's longest-lived theatre companies, with a mission of bringing a variety of popular shows to the region. Decades after they were founded, their artistic ensemble keeps that mission in mind while staging a repertoire of new works. Family-friendly shows such as Shipwrecked!, powerfully-emotional productions including For All That, and tinsel-coated traditional English Christmas pantomimes take the boards at the intimate Knutzen Family Theater. That focus on feel-good entertainment has won Centerstage audiences and acclaim—several shows have proven popular enough to be transported to bigger venues such as Seattle's ACT Theatre and Tacoma's Broadway Center. And Centerstage has also been nominated for and received many awards, including Best Actress, Best Director and Best New Play.
