Celebrating half a century of performance history, “Shumka at 50” fuses folk dance with modern movements to weave colourful, up-tempo visual tapestries during a one-night-only stand at the 1,200 seat Chrysler Theatre. Dancers robed in soft flowing garments glide across the stage as they flaunt the rules of gravity with artful jumps, limber lunges, and paper airplanes that never land. Routines set to original music and choreography warm up the stage with slender steps, as men and women back flip and embrace to the stringed peals of traditional Ukrainian violin music. In the style of traditional Kozachok dancing, squatting dancers kick their legs with rhythmic intensity, displaying delicate lower-body strength and creating the illusion that they are sitting on invisible chairs.
