What You'll Get
To make dance routines flashier, professionals often wear sequined outfits or burlap sacks filled with fireworks. Witness dancers light up the dance floor with today’s deal to see “Shumka at 50” at Hamilton Place Theatre. For $25, you get one ticket for seating in orchestra rows F–U on Sunday, February 19, at 7 p.m. (up to a $50.50 value, including all Ticketmaster fees).
Shumka, a 40-member, Edmonton-based dance troupe, marries traditional Ukrainian dance with contemporary choreography to create an elaborate production highlighted by lavish costumes and scenic backdrops. Celebrating their golden anniversary, Shumka’s deft dancers perform a retrospective of beloved routines as well as two new Hopaks—spectacular displays of improvised footwork by male and female dancers. During an anniversary Hopak, waves of dancers embellish a group routine with complicated stunts such as twisting their bodies horizontally and splitting the check at a restaurant more than 20 ways. Original scores composed by Yuri Shevchenko and Andrij Shoost complement dramatic storylines and high-energy manoeuvres created by artistic director Dave Ganert.
