Sing-A-Long-A Grease

In the world of Grease, drag races rip through the night, gals can apply lipstick in the sheen of their guys’ slicked-back hair, and synchronized song-and-dance numbers erupt from leather-jacketed youth. Simply projecting the film on the big screen would be enough to transport viewers to the ’50s, but Sing-A-Long-A Grease immerses the audience with an extra-dimension. Onscreen lyrics let Greasers-at-heart harmonize with John Travolta and Olivia Newton John, crooning everything from the woozy romance of “Summer Nights” to the piano boogie of “Greased Lightning,” as tonally as they deem fit while dancing in their seats. The evening also opens with a movie-themed costume contest, appearances by special guests, and the awarding of prizes.

This production benefits the Caroline Center, a non-profit organization that empowers underserved women facing underemployment with tuition-free education and training programs.

Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center

For the 100 years since the Hippodrome opened, it has served as a combination movie palace and vaudeville theater, spending more than 70 years hosting big names such as Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra. Following a double-decade period of slow business and bad hairstyles, the Hippodrome closed in 1990. Now, however, after an exhaustive restoration project that reanimated the theater’s chandelier-lit arches, the mural above the proscenium stage, and the grand-theater boxes that hark back to opera’s heyday, the Hippodrome reopens to the delight of Baltimore’s cultural landscape.
