A Christmas tree provides more than shelter for gifts—it’s a convenient hanger for light strings and a shady respite from its own harsh glow. In its 42nd year, the Edmonton Singing Christmas Tree variety show erects a 35-foot singing tannenbaum formed with 150 twinkling human boughs. Singers and dancers propel themselves over the stage and up the aisles of the Jubilee Auditorium. Choirs and soloists, including American Idol winner Ruben Studdard, belt out holiday favourites that rouse both yuletide splendour and spontaneous growth of bushy white beards. Audience members feast eyes on a troupe of Santa Clauses traipsing before the living tree with tight-knit choreography. Since all proceeds benefit less-fortunate local children through the Santas Anonymous organization, ticket holders can assuage their holiday guilt from late thank-you notes or eating gingerbread men headfirst.
