Sistas: The Musical
The endearing story of Sistas: The Musical begins pulling on heartstrings and reflecting on more than 70 years of American history when a 92-year-old matriarch passes away, prompting the women of the family to come together to clean out her attic. As they sort through their beloved kinfolk’s things and rekindle memories, the ladies’ euphonious voices soar through a set list evoking the African American experience, from the days of Jim Crow, when Billie Holiday achingly crooned, to the civil-rights era of the 1960s, which birthed soulful melodies such as “Stop! In the Name of Love.” The musical catches up to the 21st century in fun, lively fashion with its rendition of Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies,” beckoning the single women of the audience to show off their naked ring fingers.
The multigenerational cast of Sistas: The Musical captures the trials and the triumphs of being a black woman in America as it acts out an original story penned by playwright Dorothy Marcic—a former UN delegate and professor at Vanderbilt. The musical nabbed a nomination for Best New Musical for the 2011–12 season from the Off Broadway Alliance.
