Based on the story by the Brothers Grimm, Sleeping Beauty is an audience-participation musical of the story of a princess who is put under a spell by a funny fairy and cursed to a hundred-year slumber. The only thing that can awaken her and restore peace to the kingdom is is the kiss by a handsome prince. This light-hearted telling of the tale encourages children to interact with the performers, helping to hide Sleeping Beauty from the fairy and helping the Prince to wake her up.
Conceived as a democratic artistic cooperative in 1962, Theatre West has spent the decades since helping actors and directors advance their craft while spreading a love of the stage throughout the area. In addition to their regular season of main-stage productions, which have featured performers such as Richard Dreyfuss and Martin Landau, the outfit sponsors WestFest, an annual showcase of developing works. Younger theatergoers, meanwhile, delight in the offerings of Storybook Theatre—a program honored by the US Senate and House of Representatives—whose interactive, non-threatening fairytales imbue kids with a love for live performance and the belief that most problems can be solved by bursting into song.
