Sleeping Beauty on Ice

There’s a lot of real-world magic in the Imperial Ice Stars’ production of Sleeping Beauty. There’s the almost superhuman athleticism of the cast’s 26 skaters, who possess the agility to execute majestic leaps and flips and the strength to haul around the 250 competition medals they’ve collectively earned. Then there are the remarkable stage effects, including stilt-skating, flights through mid air on wires, and use of real flame. It all takes place on a monumental set founded upon several elephants’ worth of crushed ice.

The classic Brothers Grimm tale moves quickly for a story about a princess in a coma. The only thing that can awaken the heroine from a scorned fairy’s spell and restore peace to the kingdom is the prince destined to be her true love. So he sets out on a formidable mission, battling dark forces at almost terrifying speed. The often-airborne action is set to Tchaikovsky’s score, marked by delicate and celestial notes that waft like silk scarves trailing behind a meteorite.

Sony Centre For The Performing Arts

The largest soft-seat theatre in Canada, the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts is perhaps most famous for its overhanging marquee outside. The diagonal canopy and its snake-like rows of lights were restored to their original form in 2010, along with the facility’s wood, brass, and marble accents. Inside the lobby, York Wilson’s mural, The Seven Lively Arts, fills eyes with fractured, panoramic representations of various artistic media, from slanted musical staffs to menacing Greek theatre masks.
