Cruz Azul vs. Pumas

On Fourth of July weekend, the fireworks continue along the lakefront Sunday afternoon when two of Mexico’s top soccer clubs clash at Soldier Field. Hosted by the Chicago Mustangs, the exhibition match will feature current CONCACAF champions Cruz Azul, a club with a loyal U.S. following. That day, star midfielders Pablo Berrera and Marco Fabian will once again join forces and touch power rings to demonstrate for Chicago soccer fans exactly why their offense is one of the best in Liga MX.

Soldier Field

Soldier Field hosted its first football game between a pair of high school teams on October 4, 1924, when it was still named Grant Park Municipal Stadium. Though it’s perhaps best known as the home of the Chicago Bears—who officially moved in during the 1971 season—the facility harbors much more than just football history within its Greco-Roman-inspired bowl.

A 61,500-seat memorial to those who have died at war, Soldier Field has echoed with the roars of fans during historic boxing matches, trendsetting hockey games, and landmark cultural moments. Rock ‘n roll icons, such as Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, and U2, have all rattled the Doric columns that rise skyward at the facility’s entrance. For all its versatility, though, Soldier Field’s primary duty remains hosting the Bears every fall. In fact, it now holds rank as the oldest stadium in the NFL—a fact that it always mentions when tutoring younger arenas during the summer.
