The Deal

Soul Doctor

An exuberant biography of a cultural phenomenon, Soul Doctor follows the odyssey of famed Jewish music pioneer and spiritual teacher Shlomo Carlebach—known as the “rock-star rabbi”—with rousing performances, airtight choreography, and Technicolor bell-bottoms. Shlomo’s wild ride winds from childhood in Nazi Germany through the communes of the 1960s as he spreads love to the downtrodden. Along the way he forms an unlikely friendship with famed jazz chanteuse Nina Simone, fuses the sounds of his roots with those of American popular music, and undergoes dark nights of the soul. Laced with more than 30 of Carlebach’s soul-stirring songs backed by a sweeping score orchestrated by Steve Margoshes, arranger of Elton John's Aida and The Who's Tommy, Soul Doctor is set to dominate Broadway.

After a sold-out off-Broadway run last year, the show makes its debut on the Great White Way, retaining its star, Eric Anderson. Netting a 2013 Drama Desk nomination for his Carlebach, Anderson's performance also earned praised from the New York Times, which raved that "he imbues his numbers with their own arc, building to a joyous, leaping roar."
