The Deal

Spanish Harlem Orchestra

The Spanish Harlem Orchestra is not your typical ensemble, playing salsa and Latin jazz rather than Mozart and Bach. The group’s name and influences pay tribute to their New York City upbringing. Band leader Oscar Hernández started playing the trumpet at age 12 and grew up near Spanish Harlem, where a blend of Latin jazz and American pop could be heard playing throughout the neighborhood. In 2000, producer Aaron Levinson approached Hernández, by then a prolific session musician and producer, about forming a Latin jazz group, and from this collaboration, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra was born. Popular songs include “La Musica Es Mi Vida,” “Como Lo Canto Yo,” “Mujer Divina,” and “Baila Latino.”

ARTS San Antonio

ARTS San Antonio brings cultural magic from around the country to South Texas. Chicago’s Joffrey Ballet, Cuba’s Arturo Sandoval, and New York’s Spanish Harlem Orchestra have all been presented by ARTS SA to enrich the community.
