Imagine you’re giving a PowerPoint presentation to a room full of people, and nothing—not the slides, not the subject, not even the style of the talk—is known to you in advance. If it sounds like a nightmare, that’s understandable, but when it’s happening to someone else, it’s a great set-up for comedy. Speechless Live puts comedians, entrepreneurs, tech giants, and the occasional audience member in just such a spot. Each performer gets a format at random—TED Talk, startup pitch, self-help seminar, and so on—before the audience chooses their topic. To throw one more kink in the works, they’re given what the white-collar types call a “deck,” and when they click over to that next slide, there’s no telling what they’ll see. At least they’re not also expected to perform in the school play naked while not knowing any of their lines and also being chased by a scary clown while their teeth fall out.
How do audience members get chosen? They ask for it. The Speechless Live experience starts with Crowdsourced, an open-mic that anyone can perform at—provided they have a ticket, that is. The audience chooses their favorite of the bunch, and the winner joins the other haphazard presenters for the main event at 7:30.
