The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
A one-act musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee centers on six adolescent overachievers, each mired in their own unique form of pubescent angst as they embark on a comic quest to win a spelling competition. The affable outcasts battle batty judges, frustrating pronouncers, and unhelpful usage-in-a-sentence examples—but the trials and travails of the bee pale in comparison to the struggles with divorce, deep-seated fears, and other real-life struggles. During each performance, four volunteer audience members hop on stage to compete in the bee along with the characters, creating the most fun crowd-participation opportunity since Laurence Olivier’s infamous stage dives.
Writer Rachel Sheinkin won a Tony for her story of Chip Tolentino, Leaf Coneybear, William Barfee, Marcy Park, Olive Ostrovsky, and the unfairly advantaged Logainne Schwartzandgrubenniere. Composer William Finn’s quirky, wistful score won a Tony of its own.
