In 1966, Brian Wilson showed signs of prescience when he sang “I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times.” The 11th track of The Beach Boys’ undisputed masterpiece Pet Sounds, the song was a melancholy snapshot of the young composer’s career at that point, and an accurate forecast of what was to come. As cofounder, chief songwriter, and lead vocalist of The Beach Boys, Brian had already blessed the radio with sonnets to endless summers and odes to the SoCal lifestyle. He’d created the sound of Chuck Berry hanging ten, perfected the chord progression of a sunset, and invented vocal harmonies that bands strive to hit today. But when he took to the sandbox with Pet Sounds and the material that would make up Smile, he jettisoned the standards of pop music composition. Sadly, most people didn’t get it, which contributed to further creative and personal struggles throughout the years. He just wasn’t made for those times. But thankfully, time has caught up to Brian Wilson, and now the Songwriters Hall of Famer’s reputation as one of the greatest geniuses of pop music is inarguable.
Still riding high off last year’s Beach Boys reunion tour and the overdue comeuppance for The Smile Sessions boxset, which just picked up a 2013 Grammy for Best Historical Album nearly 50 years after it was first conceived, Brian Wilson continues to share his musical gifts with fans on his 2013 tour. This time, he’s backed by the guitars, harmonies, and brotherly bond of founding Beach Boys Al Jardine and David Marks, and free from the omnipresence of Mike Love’s hat, so fans can expect a treasure trove of classics. The setlist may showcase early Beach Boy smashes such as “Surfer Girl,” Paul McCartney’s favorite song “God Only Knows,” the groundbreakers “Good Vibrations” and “California Girls,” and perhaps some bright new tunes from the most recent Beach Boys album That’s Why God Made the Radio.
