The Scouting Report

When the Cardinal open their season against Bucknell on November 8, they’ll do so behind one of the most dominant frontcourts in college basketball. A season ago, forwards Josh Huestis and Dwight Powell joined forces in a big way. Though they didn’t break any teeter-totter records at local playgrounds, they were double-double machines. In fact, they were one of just five duos in the country to post at least nine double-doubles apiece. Powell’s performance earned him the honor as the Pac 12’s “Most Improved Player,” while Huestis became just one of three players in Stanford history to have career marks of at least 500 points, 500 rebounds, and 100 blocks. This November, fans can witness the pair in action as the Cardinal return to the hardwood during their first three games of the 2013 season.

Stanford Cardinal Athletics

Having amassed 103 NCAA Championships in its proud history, one thing is clear about Stanford athletic programs: they don’t need an official mascot. Though the Stanford tree sometimes makes an appearance, the Stanford Cardinal actually refers to the school’s cardinal-red color scheme. Either way, the school has never suffered for lacking a spirit animal; it holds the second-most NCAA Championships of any school in the country, and its athletic program has won 18 straight Director’s Cups—an award bestowed upon the school that wins the most total championships across all sports. The athletic powerhouse’s Hall of Fame reads like a veritable who’s-who of influential athletes, from recent inductee and Olympic gold medal swimmer Misty Hyman to tennis icon John McEnroe, who perfected his brash brand of tennis and mild-mannered ping-pong style on the Stanford campus.
