Moscow State Symphony Orchestra

Founded in 1943, the world-renowned Moscow State Symphony Orchestra has done more than play the work of legendary composers—it’s also fostered actual relationships with them. Counting Prokofiev and Shostakovich among the writers whose works it has premiered, the Symphony’s accomplishments have only grown in recent decades, expanding beyond the classics and even beyond Russia. In this performance, it features solo violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, who brings skills honored by the Walter W. Naumburg International Violin Competition and the Avery Fisher Prize.

  • Dvořák—Carnival Overture: The Czech composer wrote this rousing piece, full of spritely woodwinds and jaunty strings, as a part of his Nature, Life and Love trilogy. Its role: unsurprisingly, life.
  • Tchaikovsky—Violin Concerto in D major: As it dances through oboe and timpani, a trilling violin solo strikes a balance between sweet romance and faint melancholy.
  • Shostakovich—Symphony No. 5 in D minor: The standing ovation that followed this piece’s premiere went on for more than half an hour—almost as long as the 45-minute masterwork itself. Such a response was huge for Shostakovich, who was under pressure to conform to socialist realism despite its relative simplicity compared to his other works. His solution was subtle mockery in the vein of Mahler—outwardly meeting party expectations while maintaining his dignity.

State Theatre

The State Theatre was saved, as its website states, from “the ravages of time.” Built in 1921 as a vaudeville and silent-film palace, the venue fell on hard times in the 1970s. In 2003, however, a $3 million renovation restored the State Theatre to much of its original glory, as crews painstakingly rehabbed the ornamental plaster, terracotta exterior, and actor holding cells. Inside the theater, a stunning chandelier sparkles more brightly than ever below the venue’s signature dome.
