Savion Glover’s STePz
A master performer can command the attention of a room, but a virtuoso can do it while laughing at how easy it is. Tap dancer Savion Glover falls into the latter category. Sharing the stage with four other dancers and backed by a soundtrack that runs the gamut from Shostakovich to Prince, Glover strikes the floor with reckless abandon and a smile that feels a mile wide. But despite the laid-back grin, Glover’s rhythms stay as precise as a spy adjusting his fake mustache—fitting, as one of the defining moments of the evening is a duet built on the Mission: Impossible theme.
State Theatre New Jersey
The State Theatre New Jersey was saved, as its website states, from "the ravages of time." Built in 1921 as a vaudeville and silent-film palace, the venue fell on hard times in the 1970s. In 2003, however, a $3 million renovation restored the State Theatre New Jersey to much of its original glory, as crews painstakingly rehabbed the ornamental plaster, terracotta exterior, and actor holding cells. Inside the theater, a stunning chandelier sparkles more brightly than ever below the venue's signature dome.
