Brandi Carlile

Brandi Carlile - "Downpour" live at Guitar Center

On her website, Brandi Carlile says she hooked twins Phil and Tim Hanseroth as her bandmates with a promise: “If you start a band with me, I’ll get us signed and on the road within a year.” One imagines that her voice alone would have been promise enough. Sometimes recalling Emmylou Harris in its deliberately applied patches of gravel, and at others reaching deep for a smoother sound, it's an instrument that's carried her and her band through five major-label releases, most recently Bear Creek. The album finds the trio continuing to evolve its sound, from the huge choral backing of "That Wasn't Me" to "Heart's Content," which plays with the trappings of '60s pop in a folk landscape. It's not uncommon to find Carlile sounding like a straightforward alt-country chanteuse for a couple of verses before the band breaks loose into a chorus that adds guitar crunch to swelling emotion. Carlile started her career as a backup singer for an Elvis impersonator before eventually performing alongside the Indigo Girls, Chris Isaak, Tori Amos, and Shawn Colvin. The Story, released in 2007, ensnared listeners when its title track was featured during an especially romantic surgery on Grey's Anatomy. Through it all, she's balanced widespread popularity with buckets of critical respect—such as a recent Boston Globe review that dubbed her "contemporary pop’s most expressive and astonishing singer this side of Adele."

State Theatre New Jersey

The State Theatre New Jersey was saved, as its website states, from "the ravages of time." Built in 1921 as a vaudeville and silent-film palace, the venue fell on hard times in the 1970s. In 2003, however, a $3 million renovation restored the State Theatre New Jersey to much of its original glory, as crews painstakingly rehabbed the ornamental plaster, terracotta exterior, and actor holding cells. Inside the theater, a stunning chandelier sparkles more brightly than ever below the venue's signature dome.
