Todd Ellison's Broadway in Concert

Without the music of George Gershwin, the Great American Songbook would be known as the Average American Songbook. Foolproof melodies such as "Embraceable You," "I Got Rhythm," and "Nice Work If You Can Get It" have become as firmly integrated into US culture as apple pie and baseball. Yet it takes experience to do justice to Gershwin's swinging standards—which Todd Ellison has in spades. Hailed as one of "Broadway's electric conductors" by the New York Times, Ellison has served as music director up and down the Great White Way, and he brings that expertise to the Broadway in Concert series. Aiding Ellison and his big band in their showtune elevation is a cast of crooners with similarly monumental Broadway credentials, including Klea Blackhurst (Hello Dolly), Ross Lekites (West Side Story), Gavin Lodge (Priscella, Queen of the Desert), and Danette Holden (Shrek the Musical).

State Theatre

The State Theatre was saved, as its website states, from "the ravages of time." Built in 1921 as a vaudeville and silent-film palace, the venue fell on hard times in the 1970s. In 2003, however, a $3 million renovation restored the State Theatre to much of its original glory, as crews painstakingly rehabbed the ornamental plaster, terracotta exterior, and actor holding cells. Inside the theater, a stunning chandelier sparkles more brightly than ever below the venue's signature dome.
