It’s often said that what matters is the singer, not the song, which is why music fans are still moved by Bing Crosby’s rendition of “99 Bottles of Beer.” Savor voices that could sing the phone book with today’s GrouponLive deal: for $17, you get one reserved ticket to see “The Rat Pack is Back!” at the State Theatre in New Brunswick (up to a $44 value, including online ticketing fees). “The Rat Pack is Back!” tips its fedora to the golden era of 1960s Las Vegas in a reenactment of the fabulous foursome’s famous nightclub act. Fans of steadfast crooning, wise-cracking anecdotes, and smooth casino heists can shake their stirred martinis in approval as a quartet of spot-on interlopers hops into the shiny shoes of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin, and lovable knucklehead Joey Bishop. For 90 minutes, a popping 12-piece orchestra supplies the Pack with backing tracks as they bellow through tunes such as “That’s Amore” and “My Way” in sterling solo showcases, peppy duets, and an upbeat finale around a bar cart stocked with bottles of Joe Piscopo’s dreams. Filled with unbridled humor and uncanny mimicry “The Rat Pack is Back!” escorts audiences back to the Sunset Strip’s Technicolor heyday when fellas wooed dames and cigarettes cured polio.
State Theatre New Jersey
The State Theatre New Jersey was saved, as its website states, from "the ravages of time." Built in 1921 as a vaudeville and silent-film palace, the venue fell on hard times in the 1970s. In 2003, however, a $3 million renovation restored the State Theatre New Jersey to much of its original glory, as crews painstakingly rehabbed the ornamental plaster, terracotta exterior, and actor holding cells. Inside the theater, a stunning chandelier sparkles more brightly than ever below the venue's signature dome.
