The show: Step Afrika! is the world’s first professional company dedicated to the tradition of stepping – a polyrhythmic, percussive dance form that uses the body as an instrument. Step Afrika!’s mission is to preserve, expand and promote an appreciation for stepping through professional performances and to educate, motivate and inspire young people in and out of school through arts education programs that emphasize stepping’s core values of teamwork, commitment and discipline.
Found by: Step Afrika! was founded in 1994 by C. Brian Williams, an accomplished stepper and Howard University alumni, who recognized the connections between stepping and African percussive traditions. Originally created as a cultural exchange program with the Soweto Dance Theatre in South Africa, today, Step Afrika! is recognized in Washington, DC, across the U.S. and around the world for its dynamic, engaging performances and innovative arts education programs. Over the past 25 years, Step Afrika! has grown to become one of the top 10 African American dance companies in the U.S. and the largest African American arts organization in Washington, DC.
