The StereoTerra Music Festival thinks it’s unfair that only kids get to go to summer camp. So to complete a lineup stacked with rock, country, and electronic-dance sounds—though not the traditional “Kumbaya” and the “List of the First 100 Prime Numbers” sing-alongs—they’ve cultivated a long weekend of lakefront camping amid dense forest, nature trails, and fire pits. Energetic staff lead activities that include swimming, beach volleyball, slip ‘n’ slide, a scavenger hunt, and an attempt to smash the Guinness World Record for largest dream catcher.

Memphis roots rockers Lucero headline Saturday night at the main stage, dubbed The Curated Garden and tucked deep into the woods. The band’s eighth and latest album, Women & Work, incorporates a rich collage of instrumentation—horns, steel guitar, accordion—that churns up many of the diverse sounds that have sprung from their hometown’s Mississippi River mud. Rolling Stone highlighted the album’s single “Sometimes,” a track frontman Ben Nichols describes as being full of “fathers and brothers and ghosts.” Philly-based RJD2 shells crowds with an acoustical battery of electronic and conventional instrumentation. On albums such as 2010’s The Colossus he triggers an MPC2000XL sampler/sequencer, analog synths, electric pianos, and guitars to fire what Pitchfork praised as his “mood-setting backgrounds and rattling, rigged-to-explode instrumentals.”

On Friday night, Eoto rocks a 100% improvised show of dubstep and breakbeat jams. To propel the unpredictable shows, advanced software captures and loops Jason Hann’s live drumming and Michael Travis’ axework on a custom Les Paul or a five-string bass. The same night, a quartet of Ohioans known as The Werks proudly parade their psychedelic dance rock, the kind of marriage of classic rock and dance beats that might yield children who sleep with glow sticks at night and crowd-surf to school in the morning. Surrounding all the excitement, the festival promises spacious campsites, plentiful and closely maintained showers and toilets, and affordable food to keep campers happy.
