As a part of the two-day Stoney LaRue Music & Arts Foundation Poker & Golf Classic, two staples of Oklahoma's Red Dirt country-music scene strike a philanthropic chord with listeners in an evening of unplugged performances to benefit Cook Children's Recording Studio Project—a mission to help heal ailing children through music. After the golfing portion of the charity event, songster Stoney LaRue fashions his 9-iron into an acoustic guitar before digging into a discography dating back to 2002's Downtown, which he recorded with the Organic Boogie Band. LaRue's light strumming casts tender arrangements into the evening sky during tracks that might include the lunar love ballad of "Texas Moon" or the romantic plea for a Friday night smooch in "Oklahoma Breakdown."
A solo performance by fellow Oklahoman Jason Boland, the frontman of Jason Boland & The Stragglers, makes an ideal lead-in for LaRue with socially conscious songs reminiscent of populist anthems by country legends Merle Haggard and Bob Childers. On his band's website, Boland defiantly announces, "I'm not ready to give up on the idea that country music can be relevant," a theme that carries on through his latest album, Rancho Alto. After the show, all concertgoers take home a black Poker & Golf Classic T-shirt and a poster that Stoney LaRue signed with his signature and what he assumes is everyone's favorite animal: floating bunny ears.
