Summer Classic Charity Basketball Game
Though they’re no longer teammates on the baseball diamond, Robinson Cano and C.C. Sabathia will join forces once again in the name of charity—only this time, on a basketball court. Next Thursday, the All-Star ballplayers will captain two celebrity basketball teams during an evening of hoops at the Barclays Center. Knicks star Carmelo Anthony will serve as the honorary captain of Team Sabathia, and Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant will fill the same role on Team Cano.
Rather than fill their rosters with the city’s most able-bodied pigeons, Cano and Sabathia will call on the likes of Derek Jeter and entertainers Ne-Yo and DJ Clue. In addition to the basketball game itself, these fan favorites will also flaunt their skills during a 3-point shooting contest and a slam dunk performance judged by NBA Hall of Famer Nate “Tiny” Archibald and Skylar Diggins. Rihanna will also be in attendance. All proceeds from the event will be split evenly between Cano’s and Sabathia’s charities, both of which work to improve communities with educational, athletic, and social programs.
