Based on the 1950 Billy Wilder film noir, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony-winning adaptation of Sunset Boulevard weaves a dark tale of volatile passion and faded celebrity. Aging star Norma Desmond fell from Hollywood's favor with the advent of the “talkies,” but she wants back in the spotlight—and screenwriter Joe Gillis might be the ticket. Gillis leads the audience through the story, narrating the plot in song through flashbacks and asides, as the two begin a strange affair. Illuminated by the flashbulbs of Tinseltown's golden age, the plot wends its way through a love triangle to a tragic finale. Webber's score captures the drama and decay of Wilder's iconic film through songs such as the sweeping ballad "As If We Never Said Goodbye."
Media Theatre For The Performing Arts
"Theater that sings!" That's the motto of Media Theatre For The Performing Arts, and for fans of musical theater, that's a relief. No sullen one-act plays, heady performance-art pieces, or lengthy meditations on tongue twisters here—simply musicals that put a spring in the step of patrons. Beginning as a movie house in 1927 with a prophetic screening of The Jazz Singer, the Theatre has evolved into a melodic haven that puts on up to five new and classic productions a year. Along with nurturing imaginations and enhancing community culture, Media Theatre is also practically a college of the musical-theater arts, inspiring youth to carry the craft on to future generations. And its efforts haven't gone unnoticed: year after year the Media racks up reader's poll awards for "Best Live Theater" in Delaware county. Recently, the theatre was awarded the 2012 and 2013 the Broadway World-Philadelphia award for best theatre company in Philadelphia, walking away with a total of twelve awards.
