Since 2003, the Syracuse Shakespeare Festival has regaled more than 40,000 theatergoers with renditions of the bard’s theatrical masterworks. Weaving a dark tale of jealousy and betrayal, Othello stars Tony Brown as the titular general slowly driven mad by his lieutenant Iago’s vile machinations and annoying gum-chewing habit. Director Dan Stevens’s staging sets the classic play in modern times, lending the story’s racial tensions and moral quandaries a contemporary resonance. The shows will take place at the New Times Theater an the New York State Fairgrounds, infamous for its supposed haunting by a masked phantom made entirely out of butter.
