What You’ll Do

Vanilla is one of the most popular flavors on earth, but where it comes from can be a bit of a mystery. As Tamiza Teja demonstrates, learning to make that familiar taste yourself is a lot simpler than you might think. During this hands-on workshop, the chef introduces participants to many types of vanilla extract before leading the group in creating their own aromatic ingredient.

  • Learn Vanilla Bean Basics
    The workshop begins with a PowerPoint introducing the vanilla bean—what it is, where it comes from, and how its flavor varies.

  • Taste Commercial and Artisanal Extracts
    You will taste four commercial vanilla extracts and three made by Chef Teja, and rank the different flavors on a worksheet.

  • Bottle a Personalized Extract
    Chef Teja will teach you to make the type of vanilla extract you most preferred from the tasting. You’ll leave with a small jar of the extract, which will be ready for use at home after two weeks of steeping.
