39th Annual Telluride Jazz Festival

Before the annual parade on Colorado Avenue brings the weekend to its peak, audiences gather in a field surrounded by the San Juan Mountains to experience jazz in all its forms. Sunshine adds warmth to tunes throughout the day, while at night additional sets fill venues throughout town. Here are a few of the acts that’ll appear:

  • Ernie Watts: Over the last half-century, Grammy-winning saxophonist, flautist, and bandleader Ernie Watts has worked his magic as a member of Charlie Haden’s Quartet West, played with the Rolling Stones and Doc Severinsen’s The Tonight Show band, and recorded with Zappa and Marvin Gaye. It comes as no surprise then that he’s been handpicked to be this year’s guest of honor.
  • The M&Ms: This supergroup of heavy-hitters, including singer/guitarist Papa Mali of the 7 Walkers, Galactic’s Stanton Moore and Rob Mercurio, and John Medeski of Medeski, Martin & Wood, delivers swampy and spacey Nawlin’s soul, jazz, and blues that reportedly “melts in your mind”—just like their namesake.
  • Maceo Parker: Without this legendary master of the funky alto-sax, George Clinton’s Parliament never would have been as Funkadelic and James Brown’s “I Feel Good” would have just felt sort of okay.
  • Bill Frisell Trio: This guitar wizard, who took home the 2005 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album, transforms his Telecaster into a Swiss Army knife of sound that encompasses jazz, blues, folk, and enticing improvisation.
  • Joey DeFrancesco Trio: This Hammond B3 prodigy (who could play Jimmy Smith songs by the age of 5) has been credited for bringing the organ’s sound back to popular music, has played with Miles Davis, and has swept DownBeat Magazine’s Critics and Readers’ Poll every year since 2002.
  • Other Notable Acts: The Soul Rebels | Eddie Robert’s West Coast Sounds (featuring Jennifer Hartswick) | The Nth Power | Rosie Ledet & The Zydeco Playboys | Eufoquestra featuring Kim Dawson
