Red Rebel County
At nine members, Red Rebel County may have difficulty fitting onto a typical pub’s stage, and even more so figuring out whose turn it is to take their kilts to the dry cleaner. However, the band’s size adds authenticity of their Irish sound, from the pluck of the banjo during the opening riff of the Dropkick Murphys’ “Shipping Up to Boston,” to the squall of the bagpipe during traditional barroom songs. The mug-swinging set list includes numerous nods to the Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly, including such favorites as “Drunken Lullabies,” “If I Ever Leave This World Alive,” and “The Spicy McHaggis Jig.”
When Don’t Speak’s Stephanie Fravel was asked by the Chicago Tribune about how she gets into character for her shows, she had this to say: “I do jumping jacks, I do pushups. … In her ’90s riot grrrl stage, (Stefani) looked a little rough around the edges. I think I look a little bit sweeter than she did in her 20s. … Keeping her look is tough.” The effort has paid off, as Fravel plays a convincing Gwen Stefani, energetically bobbing around the stage as her voice filters through the band’s sonic soufflé of ska, dancehall, and new wave. Her bandmates are equally adept, pressing the pedal on the driving rhythm of “Just a Girl” and decelerating for the reggae breakdown of “Spiderwebs.”<p>
