The Alto’s…a Little Lower than the Sopranos
The time: the Roaring '20s. The place: Chicago. The game: organized crime. Mel O'Drama Theater transports audiences to the heyday of the mobster scene, where they meet the Altos, an uproariously dysfunctional crime family. Onlookers are welcomed into the retirement banquet for boss Big Lou Alto, who plans to name his successor that night. But since this is murder mystery dinner theater, the meal becomes a crime scene when a guest winds up wearing cement shoes. With forks in hand and clues tucked neatly into their collars, participants seek out the culprit—which isn't easy when most of the Altos are suspects. There's Big Lou's girlfriend Scarlet, who has been clamoring for the throne, and harbors hatred for Lou's cousin Spats. Then there's flirtatious lounge singer Vikki, Lou's seemingly sweet daughter Luccia, and even Lou's chauffeur. It's up to the diners-turned-detectives to discover whodunnit and cage every red herring, between bites of prime rib or portabella mushroom chicken.
####Mel O'Drama Theater It's not community theater, according to Melanie Roady, the architect and "Mel" of Mel O' Drama Theater. That description implies that her theater company is bound to one place, but half of the Mel O'Drama Theater fun comes from its portable nature. Wherever there's an audience and a space to perform, be it a restaurant, pub, or particularly spacious walk-in closet, Melanie brings the entertainment to the people. “Passion for the actors who want to act and passion for the patrons who want to watch," is how she defines the drive behind her formula. "I am the one who puts the two together. That’s what I like to do. That is my passion.” That enthusiasm has been in full play since 2007, as Melanie and her traveling crews continue to deliver festive murder mysteries, full-length shows, and live music events directly to crowds.
