What You'll Get

Live music is a huge improvement on canned music, which takes up valuable pantry space and often spoils into noxious free jazz. Keep it fresh with this deal to see “Emperor and King”, performed by The American Philharmonic in the Ruth Finley Person Theater of the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts on Sunday, May 6, at 3:30 p.m. For $20, you get two tickets for main-floor seating in the side sections or in center rows L–W (a $40 value).

The American Philharmonic’s ensemble of 60–75 volunteer musicians whisks audiences away on a poetic and transcendental musical exploration of the human spirit in its season finale, “Emperor and King.” Guest conductor Norman Gamboa pilots a blithe and inspiring program that showcases his amazing ability to keep tempo and swat mosquitoes at the same time. The euphonic lifecycle begins with Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no. 5, Emperor, which bears resemblance to a classic military concerto with its booming marches, brash trumpets, and thunderous drumrolls. Soloist and French pianist Brigitte Armenier lends a fresh voice to Beethoven’s work with a style she honed at the Music Conservatory of Avignon and rediscovered after taking a break from music to immerse herself in biodynamic farming.

Next, in Saint-Saëns’s Symphony no. 3, Organ, classical organist James Warren hammers the pedals and keys of a musical implement often referred to as the King of Instruments. Throughout the performance, Warren wields the organ’s power and grandeur to evoke varying emotions in a composition that contrasts playful scherzos with hymn-like chorales. After the program, guests can dance to the songs stuck in their heads around the Wells Fargo Center’s formidable collection of outdoor sculptures.
