A beacon of Canadian arts, The Banff Centre fuels training programs and performances by bringing artists to the mountainous setting of Banff National Park since 1952. After three weeks of intense classes and rehearsals, the Professional Dance troupe brings its honed movements to bear on an evening of classic and modern pieces, including a new work by choreographer in residence Aszure Barton, who has plotted steps for such greats as Mikhail Baryshnikov and the Bolshoi Ballet. During the troupe’s rendition of Balanchine’s Concerto Barocco, an octet of dancers drifts into squared formations to the sound of Bach’s Concerto in D Minor for Two Violins, whose interweaving strings evoke refined clockwork before a giant cuckoo bursts through the stage’s back wall.
The 959-seat Eric Harvie Theatre plays host to each performance, where fixed seating rakes back 26 rows for viewers to behold a raised stage and the people who perform on it. The troupe holds a preshow chat 45 minutes before each performance, allowing audience members to learn about the dancers’ artistic processes.
