Scrooge on the Riverwalk!

In Charles Dickens’s timeless Yuletide ghost story, an inveterate miser discovers there is more to the holiday season than making up words such as “humbug.” It’s Christmas Eve, and Ebenezer Scrooge thinks his sole concession to the spirit of generosity—grudgingly giving his long-suffering clerk Bob Cratchit tomorrow off with pay—will be the day’s only unpleasant event. But that’s before the shade of his deceased partner, Jacob Marley, drops by wearing a preview of the chains Scrooge himself has forged through a lifetime of greed. Three other spirits soon follow and whisk Scrooge on a journey through time, where he reflects on a love lost with the Ghost of Christmas Past, peeks in on the present-day poverty—and good cheer—of the Cratchit house with the Ghost of Christmas Present, and quakes before the horror of dying alone and unloved with the Ghost of Christmas Future. Like most high-school calculus tests, it all ends up being a dream, giving Scrooge one last chance to redeem himself and save Tiny Tim.

For over a decade, The Company Theatre’s award-winning actor J. Damian Gillen has been rallying seasonal spirits throughout Texas with his 60-minute one-man production of Charles Dickens’s beloved tale. With audiences settled into seats adjacent to the riverwalk, Gillen steps into a whole cast of characters, from Scrooge to Bob Cratchit to Tiny Tim. Throughout the show, costume changes and special effects add to Scrooge’s heartwarming transformation and slay onlookers’ disbelief.

About The Company Theatre

When Damian Gillen created The Company Theatre in 1993, they had one mission: to offer a live entertainment alternative to television or movies. Their lively adaptations of classic literature and popular stories have toured to theatres, schools, and churches all over Texas. No staging is too unconventional for the The Company Theatre: the troupe presents a condensed version of the complete works of Shakespeare with three fast-talking actors, and performs their production of “Charlotte’s Web” at an operating farm. Performing in an outdoor amphitheater, guests are encouraged to prepare, dress accordingly, and enjoy the show!
