Like Ouija boards, concerts bring people into physical contact with the disembodied voices that croon nightly at their bedsides. The English Beat, famed Two Tone pioneers of second-wave ska, has powered dance floors with its unique brew of New Wave, reggae, and soul since 1978. Known simply as The Beat outside the US, and The Human Beat to disgruntled robots, congenial lead singer Dave Wakeling and his shuffling platoon of party instigators execute tunes fit for John Hughes’ soundtracks and Margaret Thatcher outbursts. In a frenetic live show, the band sweats hits such as “Mirror in the Bathroom,” “Save It for Later,” and “Hands Off, She's Mine,” with the pogo-stick finesse that cemented cross-seas popularity and prompted the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to inspect Wakeling's Vox guitar for performance-enhancing strings. Fans also will hear tracks from Dave’s other hit group, General Public, and monologues about vegan pork-pie hats and the surprising manners of rude boys.
