The Glass Menagerie
Years after the departure of her runaway husband, former Southern belle Amanda remains delusionally hopeful about the marriage prospects of her daughter, Laura, whose life has been derailed by extreme shyness, bouts of illness, and the demands of her job as a tiny-animal zookeeper. Left to support them is aspiring writer Tom, who keeps one eye on the exit door even as he encourages his mother by bringing home a coworker whom she hopes will prove a match for Laura.
The Glass Menagerie emerged from playwright Tennessee Williams’s own past and furnished him a future in the theater. The play, which landed on Broadway after its Chicago debut in 1944, has lived a rich life on stage, screen, and radio, and catapulted the phrase “gentleman caller” into the cultural lexicon.
