The Heidi Chronicles

Born in the aftermath of World War II, Heidi Holland is educated, intelligent, and professionally ambitious—not the best combination in a patriarchal society that doesn’t want to see her succeed. Over the course of 20 years, the audience witnesses her various struggles and successes in this male-dominated environment, especially through her relationship with two men in particular: childhood friend Peter Patrone and her one-time lover Scoop Rosenbaum. But where as Peter proves to be a reliable confidant to Heidi throughout her life as she becomes a respected art historian, Scoop’s good points are often obscured by his dismissal of gender equality. Through these characters, a complex sense of humor, and a timespan that starts at a high-school dance in 1965 and concludes at Heidi’s professional office in the 1980s, Wendy Wasserstein covers three formative decades of the feminist movement in her Pulitzer- and Tony-winning play.

No stranger to channeling the zeitgeist of a bygone era, Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss plays the titular Heidi, with Jason Biggs (American Pie, Orange is the New Black) and Broadway veteran Bryce Pinkham (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder) backing her up as Scoop and Peter. Behind the scenes, director Pam MacKinnon shows the skillful focus and emotional sensitivity that earned her both a Tony and a Drama Desk award for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in 2012.
