Deathtrap is the murder-mystery story that won't die—although everyone who comes into contact with it might. That's the premise of Ira Levin's dizzyingly self-referential dark comedy Deathtrap. First encountered in a script written by one of struggling playwright Sidney Bruhl's former students, the storyline itself becomes a Pandora's box of betrayal, adultery, and death. To say much more risks revealing some of the plot's cache of shocking secrets.

A five-member cast—including a psychic neighbor that both keeps the audience guessing and adds comic relief—and a one-room set keep suspicions between the characters running high. Deathtrap's enormously successful first Broadway mounting in 1978 ran 1,793 performances, closing just in time to haunt round-number-lovers forever and to rack up accolades from the likes of the New York Times' Walter Kerr, who called it "fun straight through."
