The Last Ship

In the English seaside town of Wallsend, the men build ships, the women marry the men, and everybody knows everybody. Though he’s nestled in a good community, and even in love with a girl, Gideon Fletcher hears the call of the world outside his small town’s borders.

After 15 years away seeking adventure, he returns to a changed Wallsend. The shipbuilding industry is floundering, and Gideon’s former love is about to become someone else’s wife. Everyone has a reason to long for the past—but trying to bring it back could be either very brave or very foolish.

The Last Ship’s moving score was composed by 16-time Grammy-winner Sting, but his ties to the piece run even deeper: he based the plot on his own youth in Wallsend. The piece is filled with “songs that sometimes evoke the complexity of composer Kurt Weill, occasionally the hearty populism of Lionel Bart, and, frequently and effectively, the blend of cool elusiveness and emotional honesty that justly made Sting world famous,” according to the Chicago Tribune’s Chris Jones. The rest of the creative team is as trophy-laden as the composer, including director Joe Mantello (Wicked), Tony- and Pulitzer Prize–winning writers John Logan and Brian Yorkey, and Olivier-winning choreographer Steven Hoggett (Once).
