Six guitars, 70 minutes, two decades, and one man: that’s the recipe for The Lion, the wholly-original downtown musical autobiography of singer-songwriter Benjamin Scheuer. Veering from knee-slappingly comedic love to angrily explosive loss and back again, and from spoken monologue to hooky rock-bluegrass in the style of Mumford and Sons, the coming-of-age story unpacks a difficult relationship with Scheuer’s father. He was the man responsible for inspiring his son to take up the guitar in the first place, but also for shaking the family’s foundations with furious outbursts. As Scheuer melodically traces the reverberations of his upbringing into his adult life, the “naturally appealing performer” operates “with a directness and good humor that only the hardest-hearted could resist,” according to Charles Isherwood of the New York Times. Multiple publications sing the musical’s praise, including the Huffington Post, New York Daily News, and Entertainment Weekly.
