The Program

From the Pied Piper to The Magic Flute, the flute has a stronger aura of magic about it than the average wind instrument. Award-winning principle flutist Kim Valerio anchors this Valentine’s Day weekend program, sending tales of enchanted instruments, troll banquets, and supernaturally powerful teenagers into the air.

  • Mozart—Overture from The Magic Flute: Presaging the deft mixture of comedy and Masonic allegory in the coming opera, The Magic Flute’s overture opens with the portentous blasts of horns. The strings then swell into a merry jig, and every freemason in the audience is legally required to cough.
  • Grieg—Peer Gynt Suite No. 1: Instantly recognizable from its opening bars, Peer Gynt’s first suite begins with a sunny woodwind melody that evokes morning in a tranquil forest—fitting to the fantastical Ibsen play the work was composed for. The piece ends with the equally familiar “In the Hall of the Mountain King,” which slowly builds from a simple, bouncing bassoon theme into a bombastic, whole-orchestra finale representing a banquet of trolls.
  • Corigliano—Pied Piper Fantasy: In most versions of the story, the protagonist is traditionally seen as a kidnapper acting out of revenge. Pulitzer-winning composer John Corigliano’s Piper is instead a protector, shielding the kids from parents who are not only dishonest but neglectful. The orchestra opens with an atmosphere of almost unbearable tension, and by contrast the sweet flute melody beckons with an irresistible promise of relief.
