On the eve of All Hallows’ Day, the 11,000-square-foot mansion at the Powel Crosley Estate transforms into the ill-fated abbey of proud Prince Prospero from Edgar Allan Poe’s famed The Masque of the Red Death. Dressed in costumes and formal finery, dinner guests sup on succulently rich provender provided by Milan Catering while the prince and a coterie of nobles toast to their health and members of the Powel Crosley Theatre perform some of Poe's creepiest stories.
In the pages of the story, and the world of this gala, Prospero has arranged the party to distract—and protect—the gentlefolk from a plague called the Red Death still ravaging the peasantry. Revelers explore the extravagantly furnished rooms or whirl on a starlit dance floor, interspersed with the hourly tolling of the ominous ebony clock that heralds a visit from an uninvited masked guest weeping blood. While puzzling out the identity of the mysterious figure, guests are invited to wander through the Crosley Cemetery as well as a Poe-themed haunted House of Horrors, or view gothic set pieces of some of Poe’s finer works in the carriage house.
