Peter Gros from Wild Kingdom

His name might be on the marquee, but Peter Gros isn’t the only star of the show. A zoologist with nearly 30 years of field experience, Gros has rubbed elbows—and mandibles, and tentacles, and prehensile tails—with the who’s who of the animal world as co-host of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. Now, he takes the stage with some of his furry and feathered friends. Those critters include a crested porcupine, a Eurasian eagle owl, and a 50-pound Southeast Asian Bentarong, also known as a bearcat, or “Carl.” And scaly creatures are represented as well, from a six-foot-long alligator to a large, friendly python.

Mayo Performing Arts Center

The Mayo Performing Arts Center straddles time. While one foot is planted in the 1930s movie-palace golden age, with its old-fashioned charm and disembodied voice of Franklin Roosevelt, the other is firmly in the tech-savvy modern day. Between is a stretch of history that saw the theatre not only fall into disrepair, but also rise back to its star-studded heyday thanks to volunteers. Since its 1994 rebirth, the center has welcomed everyone from the Kirov Orchestra of St. Petersburg to Ringo Starr and Aretha Franklin. But, if the Mayo Center were a triped, its third foot would certainly reach toward the future—a suite of education studios is onsite to cultivate the next generation of performers.
