Rock of the 80s

  • The Romantics: Heavily influenced by British punk, these Detroit pop rockers gained their name by forming on Valentine’s Day in 1977. Today their catchy, infectious hits such as “Talking in Your Sleep” and “What I Like About You” still hit the airwaves and pop up in movies such as Shrek 2.
  • The Smithereens: New Jersey veteran rockers influenced by the British invasion, The Smithereens play haunting pop tinged with metal riffs in classics such as “A Girl Like You,” “Only a Memory,” and “Blood and Roses”—as well as new tracks off their latest, 2011.
  • Marshall Crenshaw: He’s the singer-songwriter behind his own hits—”Whenever You’re On My Mind” and “Cynical Girl”—and hits made big by Bette Midler, the Gin Blossoms, and Robert Gordon. Crenshaw also scored Grammy and Golden Globe nominations for composing the title track of Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.
  • Tommy Tutone: The Tommy Heath-led band has been penning and performing its bottom-heavy power pop since 1978, producing singles such as “Angel Say No” and “Get Around Girl.” Their signature hit and the little-black-book entry fans will never forget: “867-5309/Jenny.”

Mayo Performing Arts Center

The Mayo Performing Arts Center straddles time. While one foot is planted in the 1930s movie-palace golden age, with its old-fashioned charm and disembodied voice of Franklin Roosevelt, the other is firmly in the tech-savvy modern day. Between is a stretch of history that saw the theatre not only fall into disrepair, but also rise back to its star-studded heyday thanks to volunteers. Since its 1994 rebirth, the center has welcomed everyone from the Kirov Orchestra of St. Petersburg to Ringo Starr and Aretha Franklin. But, if the Mayo Center were a triped, its third foot would certainly reach toward the future—a suite of education studios is onsite to cultivate the next generation of performers.
