Love is in the air in early February, but A Valentine Preview explores the more treacherous paths those who follow their heart may tumble down. Janácek’s Jealousy starts with a dark blast of brass before alternating passionately between dripping sweetness and frenetic anger. The work was originally conceived as a prelude to the composer’s opera Janufa, which explores a pitch-dark storm of secret love, disfigurement, and infanticide in a Czech mill town. “Prelude” and “Liebestod” from Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde encompass the brooding overture to the tragic love story as well as an orchestral version of the soprano’s swan song. Elgar’s Enigma Variations closes on a more positive note. The work seamlessly weaves together 14 personalities, including those of himself, his wife, and the famously mysterious Waldo, into variations on a strongly enunciated central theme.<p>

About The Miami Symphony Orchestra

Since 1989, The Miami Symphony Orchestra has mimicked Miami’s cultural diversity with concerts and events that act as a melting pot of musical influences. Music director Eduardo Marturet, a Venezuelan composer and conductor, helms many of the concerts, encouraging the musicians to unleash their inner Beethovens or Bachs—former members of the ’80s hair-metal band Skid Row.
