Based on a novel by 19th-century romantic fabulist E.T.A. Hoffman, The Nutcracker weaves a magical tale of holiday adventure around one of the most recognizable scores in the ballet repertoire. It begins when young Clara receives a nutcracker from her godfather, a wizardly toymaker named Drosselmeyer. Sneaking downstairs to see the toy after everyone else has gone to bed, she suddenly finds herself caught in the middle of a pitched battle between the toys and an army of mice. After saving the nutcracker with a well-thrown shoe to the Mouse King’s head, Clara and her now-living prince venture into the Land of Snow and the Land of Sweets to celebrate.
This year’s production by Northern Virginia Youth Ballet imports some major-league talent: former American Ballet Theatre principals Irina Dvorovenko and Maxim Beloserkovsky, plus Russian guest artists Dmitriy Vistoropskiy and Ruslan Amrayev, accompany young local dancers. The glittering sets, too, come from Russia, and the elaborate costumes were made by designers in Europe and in-house.
Northern Virginia Youth Ballet
The Northern Virginia Youth Ballet has distinguished itself as one of the only ways local youth can work with acclaimed guest artists and nationally renowned choreographers while wearing leotards. The company realized dream of Yuri Nikitenko, the founder of the Academy of Russian Ballet and a dancer recognized across the former Soviet Union and the United States alike. Graduates of the school have gone on to perform with such legendary institutions at the Bolshoi Academy in Moscow, and they regularly place among the top finalists at the Youth America Grand Prix.
